Today my guest is Ricky McAddock, CEO of Street Connect a non-profit organization that aims to heal addiction through connection. They are doing amazing work and reaching people who would otherwise be lost. What I didn’t know prior to meeting Ricky is that Glasgow Scotland has 3.5x the addiction rate of all of Europe. Street Connect offers zero to low cost options for people who are struggling with addiction. We talk about some of their success stories as well as his own.
But before we jump in, it’s time for new resources! Today I want to share an audiobook I return to over and over again and it’s called “Radical Acceptance” by Tara Brach. I’m not a great sleeper and sometimes I wake up super early and my brain just starts going off without my consent. It’s so rude. So what I do is I keep my earbuds nearby and I listen to this audiobook. Tara has a very soothing voice which helps put me back to sleep, but it also has a way of putting my mind at ease. She talks about how we all suffer from self aversion or shame, and how to heal from that with self acceptance and self compassion. It also has guided meditations and practical exercises that bring peace. I couldn’t say how many times I’ve listened to it over the years but I always get something new from it. If you want to check it out, you can actually get a free copy by visiting the website at odaatchat.com and sign up for an audible membership. Audible is the only partnership I have because it has become my favorite way to consume books. And if you try it, I hope you love it!
So without further ado, Please enjoy the episode with Ricky.
