I’m a HUGE fan of audiobooks because I like to listen while I’m doing other things like driving, walking my English Bulldog Teddy, or exercising or just puttering around the house.
I’m currently obsessed with Brene Brown’s new book, Atlas of the Heart. For instance, chapter 2 is about “Places we go when we compare”. This is a big concept. She goes into detail about envy, jealousy, resentment, schadenfreude, and freudenfreude. She says that comparison isn’t actually an emotion but it can drive all sorts of feelings around relationships and self worth. And we don’t even know we’re doing it!
That’s not even the tip of the tip of the iceberg. I might have to hold a book study, it’s that good! Today my guest is the extraordinary Lisa Smith. She is the brilliant author of “Girl Walks Out of a Bar” and co-host of the very popular “Recovery Rocks”.
Holy cow this lady is smart. When she got sober, she held a very challenging position at a law firm. Talk about high functioning! Wow… Yet she would look into the mirror by her front door and “I hate you” as she walked out every morning. That’s intense, and I totally understand that feeling to my core.
The detail of her recovery experience gave me a visceral response. Especially the detox part. It reminded me of how bad things can get, and the rest of the story is evidence of how far we can go when we do the work to heal. Truly a miracle.
