After almost 7 years of hosting the podcast, I’m super excited to share the first ever Mother and Son interview! You’ll remember Wendy Adamson who has been on to talk about her books, Love her to the moon and back, and today her son Rikki Mendias joins us to talk about his new book that is launching on 12/15/2022. It’s called “Dream Out Loud-A Sneakerhead’s Path to Redemption”.

I loved this conversation, because we rarely hear from the kids who are caught in the crossfire. So many parents in recovery carry guilt and shame about the effect their drinking has had on their children’s lives. Today, you will hear a story of hope and healing. I hope it gives you peace to know that those relationships can heal and flourish, given work and time.

Before we jump in, I don’t have a lot of announcements, but I do want to acknowledge that we are headed into the holiday season which can be challenging for a lot of us. Whether it’s having to go to holiday work parties where people are drinking or spending time with family members who trigger you, it’s important to be mindful of taking care of yourself.

I have a couple of strategies that keep me safe in both of those situations that I’ll share with you. The first is always practicing self care. Spending a few minutes in the morning feeding my soul with inspirational literature, meditation and journaling is a priority for me. It increases my chances of being able to pause and respond to challenging people instead of reacting like a dick and regretting it later. I hate making amends, so it’s better to just take care of myself so I can manage my emotions.

The second thing is to have a plan when it comes to social events. I don’t have to worry about it too much these days because I no longer work in corporate and I don’t expose myself to people who are toxic. When I did, I would make sure I felt centered before I left, I would grab a non-alcoholic drink as soon as I arrived to avoid offers of booze. If anyone ever asks me about what I’m drinking, I am prepared with an answer that I’m comfortable with. People tend to receive information at the same intensity that I deliver it so if I’m casual about it like, I’m driving tonight, or I have an early morning, then quickly change the subject, it’s no big deal. I have a tendency to ask people questions about themselves so it takes the focus off of me.

Anyway, I hope that helps you to have peace during this holiday season!

And without further delay, please enjoy this episode with Wendy and Rikki.
