Joe Conniff, Author of “Causes and Conditions” on Recovery from Addiction and the Power Differential in Sobriety

This episode is sponsored by Audible. Audiobooks and podcasts are my favorite way to consume content. I have a hard time sitting still and focusing, so since I discovered Audible, I rarely buy physical books anymore. Unless it’s a workbook or a text that I want to study, I get the audio version so I can listen to amazing teachers like Brene Brown, author of Atlas of the Heart, Dr. Bruce Perry & Oprah Winfrey who wrote, “What happened to you? Conversations on Trauma, resilience and healing” which is my current obsession, or “The Body Keeps the Score: Brain, Mind, and Body in the Healing of Trauma “by Bessel Van der kolk just to name a few.

I listen as I walk, when I’m in the car, or just putzing around the house. Maybe it’s an ADHD thing, but when my body is busy, it’s easier for me to focus on what I’m listening to and absorb the message.

These kinds of books are so important to my recovery because I’m gaining insight as to why I think and behave the way I do, and I learn specific actions to take in order to find freedom, clarity and peace of mind.

If you’d like to try Audible, you can get your first book free by visiting odaatchat.com and subscribing through my affiliate link, cancel at any time. And if you do, I hope you love it as much as I do!

Today my guest is Joe Conniff, author of Causes and Conditions: A Life Experience in Addiction and Recovery. He does a TON of service work to help people recover in the Seattle, WA area. Joe shares his story of growing up around addicts, trauma in his teens, his own experience of DUI’s, jails, and chronic relapse, as well as his experience of becoming free of addiction. We talked about something he called “The power differential” which speaks to the difference between peer support and professional support and how it affects people in early recovery.

Joe has an amazing story and we cover a lot of recovery resources as well. I really learned a lot from Joe in this conversation and spent the next couple of days thinking how grateful I am that there are people like him in the world. So with that, please enjoy this episode with Joe.
