That’s the question at the center of this week’s episode, and it changed how I think about recovery.

Tyler Patrick is a licensed marriage and family therapist who’s been practicing since 2005, and co-founder of Therapy Brothers alongside his brother Brandon. He’s also about two decades into his own recovery, a journey that started when his wife discovered his addiction seven years into their marriage. Everything he teaches, he’s lived first.

The Racetrack of Shame

Tyler describes shame as a racetrack. It starts with a core belief formed in childhood, something like “I’m not enough” or “I’m unlovable.” That belief leads to a second one: if people really knew me, they’d reject me. So we build masks, stay guarded, and end up lonely. Eventually life gets hard and we reach for the mood-altering thing, whatever that is for us, only to feel numb or guilty afterward. “That’s exactly what shame is,” Tyler told me. “That’s how shame works.” Then we loop right back to the start.

The Three Cs of Shame Resilience

Tyler walked me through the three tools he teaches clients to break that cycle: context, courage, and compassion. Context means recognizing you’re not the only person dealing with this, it’s a human struggle, not a personal defect. Courage means finding a few safe people who can hear your whole story and still love you. Tyler shared the story of telling his own therapy clients about his addiction, terrified it would end his career, and instead finding that 11 out of 12 people in the room trusted him more, not less.

Talking to Yourself Like Your Best Friend

The third C, compassion, might be the most practical. Tyler teaches clients to notice the physical sensation of shame, remind themselves that feeling this way is human, then place a hand over their heart and talk to themselves the way they’d talk to their best friend. It felt fake at first, he admitted, but after weeks of repetition it became muscle memory.

“There is so much freedom on the other side of secrecy, hiding, shame. There’s just authenticity, and integrity brings a ton of freedom.”

Recovery was never about being perfect. As Tyler put it, you just need to be a little more yes than no. Every small act of self-compassion adds another pebble to the right side of the scale, and over time, that’s what tips it.

Action Items

Notice where shame shows up in your body (tight chest, sinking shoulders, a knot in your stomach)

Name it out loud: “This is shame, and it’s human”

Put your hand over your heart and talk to yourself like you’d talk to your best friend

Find one person who meets Tyler’s four criteria: willing to learn, keeps confidences, shoots straight with empathy, doesn’t try to control your choices

Practice the self-compassion exercise daily, even when it feels fake, repetition is what makes it real

Remember the law of 51%: you don’t need perfection, just a little more yes than no

Ask yourself “what’s really going on?” before reacting to a trigger

Resources Mentioned

Therapy Brothers – https://www.therapybrothers.org/

Kristin Neff’s self-compassion framework

Atomic Habits by James Clear

The Huberman Lab podcast

👊 Need help applying this information to your own life?

Here are 3 ways to get started:

🎁 Free Guide: 30 Tips for Your First 30 Days – With a printable PDF checklist
Grab your copy here: https://www.soberlifeschool.com

☎️ Private Coaching: Make Sobriety Stick
https://www.makesobrietystick.com

Subscribe So You Don’t Miss New Episodes!

Listen to the episode on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, or Amazon Music, or you can stream it from my website HERE.

You can also watch the interview on YouTube:
https://www.youtube.com/@theonedayatatimepodcast?sub_confirmation=1

Transcript

Addiction Recovery: Overcoming Guilt & Shame with Tyler Patrick

Arlina Allen: [00:00:00] Well, Tyler, thank you so much for joining me today.

Tyler Patrick: So glad to be with you, Arlina

Arlina Allen: So glad to be with you, Arlina. I got to be on your podcast with, on Therapy Brothers, and, um, spent some time with you and Brandon.

It was such a great experience for me, uh, he and I did a episode together, and so now you’re on the hot seat.

Tyler Patrick: You get, you get Brandon who’s the younger brother, but maybe a little more talented, and now you get the older brother today. And listen, uh, we’re gonna be talking about relapse, relapse prevention, you know, what, what to do if you do relapse and, and some ideas around guilt and shame.

So, um, what would you say the listener is gonna get by the end of the episode?

Tyler Patrick: Yeah, hopefully by the end of the [00:01:00] episode, we’ll talk about a working definition of shame, how it affects your overall recovery, and then we’ll give a few tools and practical

Arlina Allen: practical

Tyler Patrick: skills that you can use to become shame resilient

Arlina Allen: I love that. Let’s start off with a little bit about who you are. How long have you been a therapist? I’ve been a therapist since… I think I graduated in 2005 as a licensed marriage and family therapist.

Tyler Patrick: I’ve been a therapist since, I think I graduated in 2005 as a licensed marriage and family therapist.

Arlina Allen: Okay. You got

Tyler Patrick: Yeah.

Arlina Allen: some decades in there.

Tyler Patrick: Too long.

Arlina Allen: Too long. It’s like

Tyler Patrick: It’s like a life sentence. Uh

Arlina Allen: Yeah. Well, listen, I mean, that just speaks to your dedication and your passion for, for helping people, and I was telling you before we hit record that after about 500 episodes, I have a pretty good BS detector, and you guys have such a good vibe.

I can really tell not only that you get the addiction recovery space because not all therapists do. Uh, you’d be, you’d be shocked at some of the things that I’ve heard over the years.

Tyler Patrick: oh, I’m, I can imagine

Arlina Allen: Oh, I, I can imagine. Yeah, but I think it’s so important that if somebody’s early [00:02:00] recovery, thinking about it, to, sort of employ somebody or, um, get some help from somebody who really knows the space.

There’s a lot of nuance to it, for sure.

Tyler Patrick: 100%. And yeah, you’re right, Arlina, this is all, all of, all of my skin is in the game here because everything we talk about is stuff that I’m working on myself. You know what it’s like, you know?

Arlina Allen: Yeah. Are you in… You’re not in recovery yourself, are you?

Tyler Patrick: Yeah, I’ve been in recovery since my wife found out all my garbage about seven years into marriage.

Arlina Allen: All

Tyler Patrick: And,

Arlina Allen: and

Tyler Patrick: yeah, and then I decided to,

Arlina Allen: to,

Tyler Patrick: I better make some changes or I was gonna lose everything that was important to me. So yeah, I’ve been in recovery for about, I don’t know, 15, 20 years now

Arlina Allen: Okay. What are you in recovery from?

Tyler Patrick: addiction

Arlina Allen: Okay, that’s the… You know what? I am so glad you said that because that is… I was… You know, so my podcast is 10 years old now, and I was going through some of my analytics, and I’ve only done a couple of episodes on that, but those are some of the [00:03:00] highest ranking episodes. I don’t think people really understand um, easy it is to hide in that addiction

and how destructive it can be.

Tyler Patrick: 100%. And for me it was the thing that would, could be kept secret the easiest. You know, substance addiction, I would’ve been busted a lot faster probably. So, so

Arlina Allen: my hand.

Tyler Patrick: yeah, yeah.

Arlina Allen: Yeah,

Tyler Patrick: so, and, and I think that’s one of the reasons why I like talking about shame so much is because shame was the thing that was the real problem even more so than the acting out was itself

Arlina Allen: Yeah. Absolutely. Yeah. A- And you know, you guys call it acting out and sex addiction, um, in drug and alcohol it’s like relapsing or using, and those are both sympt- those are both solutions to the problem of shame in most cases, right? Either, deep-rooted trauma that has gone on, gone unresolved that people don’t even know that they have [00:04:00] they’ve dissociated from it.

So a lot of people are walking around with trauma, and they don’t even know it. really kinda crazy.

Tyler Patrick: That’s, uh, 100%. We, we talk about, we call it the trauma tree with our clients, where they come in with a presenting problem, and it’s usually the relapsing or the acting out or the, the addiction itself. That’s the fruit, and then we start looking at the fruit and saying, “Okay, what’s happening to create this fruit over and over again that’s not working for you?”

And then we get into leaves and branches, which are all the ways we perform the different layers of denial, the different behaviors that protect the addiction, and then it moves down to the core, which is the trunk of the tree, and that’s where our core beliefs are formed. The I am basically blank. I’m not enough, I’m weak, I’m unlovable, and that’s tied to the roots, and the roots of the tree are our life experiences that have informed the beliefs, that inform the way we show up, that then lead to the coping that we have.

And so people [00:05:00] come in and they think, “Oh, I’ve got this problem,” and they list off the, the acting out, the using, and then we have to start saying, “That’s actually the fruit of a deeper plant, and let’s address the whole plant

Arlina Allen: Yeah, that makes a lot of sense. And, and listen, um, the, the fruits or the what’s, what’s obvious, like the problem, like that, those are just the symptoms, right? And I always… It’s so interesting ’cause I did a, um, hypnosis certification. I do that with some of my clients. And what’s so interesting is, like, people have, like, a feeling, which is typically a response to some sort of, uh, situation, right?

They experience a, a situation. They have some sort of feeling, and based on that feeling, based on their beliefs, they make a decision, and then they take action, and then that invokes the law of cause and effect. People take action. They experience the effect. And what happens, I think of it like a racetrack, right?

Like, people keep [00:06:00] taking steps. They take actions, uh, but they end up right where they started. Like, I can’t tell you how many times I’ve talked to somebody, and they’re like, “How did I get here again?” And they don’t understand that It starts way subconsciously with your ex- the experiences and the conclusions that you came to based off of those experiences.

And typically, those conclusions that, um, were developed, uh, happen in childhood. Like, by the time you’re eight years old, you sort of have all these subconscious beliefs. And it’s almost as if an eight-year-old is deciding how to run your life.

Tyler Patrick: It feels that way sometimes, right?

Arlina Allen: yeah.

Tyler Patrick: My, my wife tells me all the time, she’s like, “Tyler,” like, “why do you love your job so much?” And I said, “Because I get to, like, hang out what feels like my high school buddies every single night when I do my groups.” And it’s because emotionally that’s kind of where we’re at.

So yeah, using, using that analogy of the racetrack, this would [00:07:00] maybe be a good way to describe the cycle of shame a little bit ’cause there, there is like a racetrack to it. Is that okay?

Arlina Allen: please tell me.

Tyler Patrick: So yeah. So it starts with exactly what you were just saying there, these beliefs that start to form that we don’t even realize are forming as we’re growing up, and it starts with this core belief that says, “I am basically blank.”

Arlina Allen: your

Tyler Patrick: maybe your listeners can plug this in for yourselves, okay? So I am basically weak.

Arlina Allen: seems to be a big

Tyler Patrick: I’m not good enough, inadequate, unlovable. My, my big one is failure. I’m a failure. Um, and that belief has been reinforced through life experiences without us knowing it, and so it just feels true. And then that leads to a second belief that says, “If people really knew me, they blank.”

They won’t love me. They’ll reject me. They’ll judge me. And that’s our biggest fear as human beings because we’re wired for connection and attachment, and now we believe something is so flawed in us that if [00:08:00] people saw it, they won’t love us. And so we form ways of coping, and we call it the masks. We perform the way that people want us to be, or at least we think that, but we never let anyone get too close, and then we feel alone.

And so we’re rounding the track. We get to a third core belief that says, “I have to be on my own. I have to take care of myself. I should be independent. I’ve got my own problems. I need to cope with life, but I’m gonna be perfect for everybody.” And then life happens, and you get bored, lonely, angry, stressed, tired, hungry, rejected, whatever, and that’s where we end up in the mood altering experience, which is the drugs, alcohol, sex, porn, video games, spending money, whatever that is.

We get the little bit of relief, and our brain says, “Ah, I don’t have to think about this for a minute.” But then we end up either feeling completely numb, or we feel this, like, guilt. [00:09:00] It’s like, “Ah, something’s not right. That was outside of my values.” Either one of those is a sign that we should change, but instead we just loop back to the end of the track again which is, “What you just did is proof that you’re no good,” and let’s just cycle it through again and again.

And that’s exactly what shame is. That’s how shame works.

Arlina Allen: Yeah, you know, that shame spiral is terrible because I think, um, one of the symptoms that I see in people that are going through sort of the drug and alcohol addiction is they’re– while under the influence, they do things are… So it’s not only just the using, but it’s the, um, acting out under the influence, doing things that you wouldn’t– that are super out of character. You know, like, uh, saying things that you don’t really mean or, um, sexual promiscuity or spending money or putting yourself in dangerous situations. A-and then so then it– then you wake up the next day, and you kinda come to your senses, [00:10:00] and then the meaning that people typically assign to themselves, it’s not just, “I’m not good enough.”

It’s like this annihilation. It’s like character assassination to the tenth degree. It’s so bad. It’s, it’s just such, like, self-loathing, self-hatred. know, it leads people to a really dark place, and then trying to, like, do the, um, mental gymnastics of, Oh, maybe next time I’ll be able to control it.” I mean, it’s a, it’s a whole thing. it’s a mess.

Tyler Patrick: Oh, it’s huge. Uh, and I think what you s- spoke there is really pivotal in recovery work, uh, for people who are maybe brand new to this and they’re thinking, “I just need to stop using alcohol or drugs or something.” The bigger part of this in a lot of ways for a lot of people is the beating yourself up in all the garbage that took place when you were using,

Arlina Allen: Yeah.

Tyler Patrick: And then you’re looking at your s- self, and instead of going like, “Phew, that wasn’t in my values. I probably ought to make some

Arlina Allen: you’re horrible.” And-

Tyler Patrick: changes or [00:11:00] choices,” it turns into, “You’re the worst person. I can’t believe. You’re the h- you’re horrible.” And yeah. Yeah. Yeah. 100, 100%.

Arlina Allen: We do a lot of swearing in my hood. We’re swear- 真

Tyler Patrick: Yeah, for sure. And, and we’re the, we’re the worst to ourselves, aren’t we?

Yeah.

Arlina Allen: Yeah, things you can’t even say out loud. But yeah, it’s, it’s terrible. The, the self-annihilation is, is, is brutal. then it does sort of reinforce this idea that I do need to be alone. Nobody’s coming to rescue me. I gotta figure it out on my own. And this, you know, it’s so funny, like I always say, in 12 step, figure it out is not a slogan.

Tyler Patrick: Yeah.

Arlina Allen: Yeah

that’s not a slogan for a reason,

Tyler Patrick: Yeah,

Arlina Allen: I, I need to figure it out. It’s like my best thinking got me into this situation to begin with. But it’s not really on a thinking level, on an emotional impulse level.

Can you talk to me about the impulses that [00:12:00] trigger people to just, even though they have all this data drinking is bad for them, what causes them to just throw that all out the w- we call it the fuck its.

Tyler Patrick: yeah. yeah.

Arlina Allen: swear, but

Tyler Patrick: Yeah. Yeah, they call it, yeah, they call it the case of the fuck its or, um, I think the, uh, the research term that was coined in the academic world was the what the hell effect. And,

Arlina Allen: okay,

Tyler Patrick: it’s a, so they did the… I- they did a really cool study.

Arlina Allen: Yeah.

Tyler Patrick: I know. They did a cool study at Duke University where they brought a bunch of people into the lab, and they had them eat a donut really fast and then drink a big glass of water to make them feel kind of miserable.

And then they walked them down the hall and opened up another room to a table full of different kinds of chocolates. And they said, “We want you to taste test this. You eat as much as you need to to get a good reading on all of these things.” And, uh, but what they were really measuring [00:13:00] was the what the hell effect.

And half of the people walked down the room. The person would say, “Hey, we know that people feel disgusted with themselves, and they feel kind of full and like they’ve let themselves down. Don’t. Everybody indulges once in a while. You’re gonna be okay.” And then the other people, they just left in their own minds.

And the people who got the message of self-forgiveness ate around twenty-nine grams of chocolate to get the r- assessment. And the people who got no self-forgiveness, they ate over seventy grams of chocolate.

Arlina Allen: Oh

Tyler Patrick: so what they were measuring was that thing in our heads that says, “You suck.” And, you know, once you get the you suck going, the case of the fuck its comes in,

Arlina Allen: Yeah.

Tyler Patrick: now all of a sudden it’s not just, “Oh, I’ll have a couple drinks.”

I’m gonna hammer… get hammered, and then I’m gonna spend all my money, or then I’m gonna sleep with someone else, and then… And, and that’s exactly what happens. And what’s crazy about this is we think [00:14:00] we’re gonna solve the problem by beating ourselves up over and over again, only to find ourselves there time and time again

Arlina Allen: Yeah. whole idea of, um, beating ourselves up, it’s like, you know, trying to run a marathon on a broken leg. Like, it just doesn’t make any sense that if you beat yourself up, you’re, you’ll somehow beat yourself into submission. But it’s, it’s sort of like this…

What I, I find that, um, any time we tell ourselves that I should do something, it, like, creates this natural internal resistance to make us wanna rebel. There’s a, a l- a lot of people with, uh, addiction issues have, like, this really big rebellious streak, and I think it’s because we go through the cycle of using, you know, um, like you give in, you relapse, you use, uh, all hell breaks loose, you feel horrible the next day.

Then you’re like, “Okay, I’m gonna do this thing,” and it’s sort of like doormat to dictator, right? Like, you, you just sort of, like, lay [00:15:00] down and just let the world run over you, and then the next day you become, like, this rules dictator. Everything’s gonna change. My diet, my… I’m gonna read a journal and exercise and do the…

Do you know what I mean? Do the whole thing. But what that does, it, it creates, like… It’s saying, “I should d- be doing this” or, “I should be different even” or, “I’m…” Do you know what I mean? So it’s like all this resistance is created, and I feel like that creates, like, a sense of rebellion rather than, like, “I’m going to exerci- exercise because I feel better afterwards” or, “I’m gonna eat, make good health- food choices ’cause I feel better afterwards, not because that I should.” What c- what… How do you feel about, you know, creating an environment that you’re sorta led by, um, good feelings instead of shoulds?

Tyler Patrick: Oh, I love where you’re going. This ties directly into shame, because shame is like this teeter-totter of control, be perfect, let it all [00:16:00] go, beat yourself up. And I think people, y- they associate accountability with beating themselves up and, and they get it wrong because then when they beat themselves up, then they’re in the shoulds and now they’re being coerced into making a good choice for themselves rather than trusting themselves first and then listening to what’s best for them.

So if, if I wake up in the morning and I ask myself, “What’s gonna be good for me today?” I can tell you right now that heroin or alcohol or for me, pornography or other women or whatever, that’s actually not good for me. But I have to have a level of self-trust first. And so accountability comes when I’m making choices for the life that I want

Arlina Allen: want

Tyler Patrick: than because I’m so bad.

Arlina Allen: bad.

Tyler Patrick: Right?

Arlina Allen: Yeah. I feel like that self-trust piece is so [00:17:00] important, because when you’re going through the, these cycles, guilt and shame, addiction relapse, the, these cycles that we go through, um, that’s, that’s a really big part of that.

Tyler Patrick: Uh, 100%. That’s what holds it all in place, right? And that’s what shame does, is it takes trust away from ourselves because we believe we’re not worthy of, you know, trust, connection. It pulls us into an isolated hole rather than becoming shame resilient and going, “Wait a second, what I’m experiencing is human.

I can do something about it. I can keep growing into my values, and I l- I can like what I see in the mirror even if I’m not perfect

Arlina Allen: Yeah. What are… I mean, I think you just kind of encapsulated it, but to just be really specific about rebuilding trust, you think of it as a process? Are there s- some more ideas, mindset around…

Are there specific [00:18:00] actions people can take to rebuild trust? Self-trust.

Tyler Patrick: Yeah. Are we talking trust with self or…

Arlina Allen: Or-

Tyler Patrick: Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. So these are some shame resiliency tools that we teach in our practice. We teach the three Cs of shame resilience,

Arlina Allen: Okay.

Tyler Patrick: and the first one is to learn how to use context pro-appropriately. Shame wants us to go into a tunnel and think that we’re the only ones who are dealing with X, Y, or Z, and context opens up that tunnel and says, “Wait a second.”

So like for instance, if I’m addicted to pornography, let’s say, I think I’m the only one out of anyone that I know that keeps this secret in place. And yet when I do the research, the industry s- makes over $100 billion a year, and about 70% of men are pursuing pornography at least monthly. Um, that’s not an excuse, but what it does is say, “Wait a [00:19:00] second.

What I’m dealing with is a human thing. Like it’s part of the human condition.”

Arlina Allen: Yeah.

Tyler Patrick: Right? So if I can s- broaden the context, understand the nature of the problem, then it’s not a me thing, like I suck thing. It’s, it’s like a, “Ooh, this is a human challenge that I have to figure out.” Right?

Arlina Allen: Yeah.

Tyler Patrick: So

Arlina Allen: that idea of a human challenge. Um, I like to reframe some of the language in 12-step where they talk about character defects.

Tyler Patrick: Hmm

Arlina Allen: I like to think of them as human frailties. I think there’s something so powerful about understanding the science behind the mechanism because then you see, oh, it’s not personal. It’s not personal to me. You know, a lot of people this same issue. It’s just a human condition.

Tyler Patrick: All right.

Arlina Allen: listen, everybody’s got something. Like, if people who say, “Oh, I don’t have an addiction,” okay, uh, give me your phone

Tyler Patrick: Yeah, right.

Arlina Allen: know what I mean?

Tyler Patrick: Well,

Arlina Allen: [00:20:00] Lock up your phone for 24 hours. Let’s,

Tyler Patrick: see how that goes. Yeah. It’s because… Well, and the point that you’re actually making is, is that we are kind of wired that way,

Arlina Allen: Yeah.

Tyler Patrick: and anyone could look at this from a much smaller level if they wanted to. But if you get your dopamine for free or cheap, there’s a pretty good chance that you’re right on the verge of something addictive

Arlina Allen: the verge of something addictive

For free or for cheap. There was this guy, I can’t remember his name, but, uh, he said, “Easy choices, hard life. Hard choices, Easy

Tyler Patrick: laugh. Yeah

Arlina Allen: Yeah. You know, so these easy choices of, like, giving into the phone, pornography, drugs, alcohol, shopping, uh, maybe Netflix in my case,

Tyler Patrick: Yeah

Yeah,

Arlina Allen: a little TikTok.

Tyler Patrick: Yeah

Arlina Allen: haven’t mastered putting it down after 10 minutes.

I think there’s apps for that, but, um, yeah, that’s, that’s cheap dopamine, for sure, and then you pay for it later. I’m, I’m… I, uh, have decided that has a price, and if you pay the price up front, then you’re, [00:21:00] you’re better off. You’re less likely to fall into these bad habits. But if you have to pay the price on the back end, that’s when it’s really problematic.

So anything that’s, you know, like you say, cheap and easy, I could have been, I could have been described as that

Tyler Patrick: yeah.

Arlina Allen: long time ago. But

Tyler Patrick: Yeah

Arlina Allen: know what I mean? It’s like,

Tyler Patrick: Yeah.

Arlina Allen: Yeah, that’s a, that’s, that’s a problem. yeah

Tyler Patrick: Yeah, 100%.

Arlina Allen: so that was the first C, the context and, and human challenges. What is the next one?

Tyler Patrick: The next C is we’re big on courage,

Arlina Allen: Ooh.

Tyler Patrick: and courage takes the ability to lean into fear and discomfort a little bit. And what courage really means is learning to tell the story of who you are with your whole heart.

Arlina Allen: Mm-hmm. So

Tyler Patrick: this gets down to is I need at least a few other people in my life that can see all of me and love me.

And once I have a few people who see even the ugliness and they’re going, “I feel you,” [00:22:00] or, “That’s me too,” or, “Oh my gosh, thank you for sharing. That took so much courage,” it starts to fracture shame, ’cause shame says you’re not lovable because of this. Like listen to your, your, your listeners right now could be like, “What’s the one thing in your life that you don’t want anybody to know?”

And you can think about that right now, and you’ll notice your body shut down, you’ll notice things close up. And when I say, “Go tell somebody you trust,” watch what happens to your body. It’s instantly gonna revolt against you because it doesn’t trust that people can love you with whatever it is that you’re dealing with.

And yet that’s gonna change when a few people… Like listen, like Arlina and I, you’re, we’re talking together right now about some of the worst things we’ve ever done in our lives,

Arlina Allen: have happened in our lives,

Tyler Patrick: right? It’s like we’re not worse off for it.

Arlina Allen: Yeah.

Tyler Patrick: more shame resilient now than you probably ever have been because of it,

Arlina Allen: yeah, yeah. No,

Tyler Patrick: right?

Arlina Allen: a, I wrote a book and I dished all the dirt and yeah. But y- [00:23:00] you know, I have the benefit of 32 years of sobriety, so I’ve been telling my, all my dirty little secrets for decades now, so I’m kind of immune to it. But trying to think of something. I was like, I, you know what? I used to have a sponsor who would tell me, like, we would be doing our step work, we’d be talking and blah, blah. At the end of the call she would say, “Is there anything you don’t wanna say?”

Tyler Patrick: That’s a great question.

Arlina Allen: that great?

Tyler Patrick: Yeah

Arlina Allen: she was so safe that she made it easier for me. Like when you’re talking about courage and leaning into fear and discomfort, I was not afraid her presence. Like I knew I could tell her anything and she wouldn’t shame me or surprised or shocked or whatever. So she lessened my discomfort and I was able to lean into that and, uh, usually it then, it tacked on another 20 minutes to our conversation, bless her heart.

Tyler Patrick: Yeah

Arlina Allen: But I find that, um, like finding courage, hard. It’s painful. You [00:24:00] know? This, if you’re afraid of something, like fear of rejection, fear of abandonment, if you’re coming into addiction recovery because your family did that shit to you, then it’s gonna be…

It

Tyler Patrick: Yeah

Arlina Allen: it’s gonna be 10 times more intense for the person. is that, am I on the

Tyler Patrick: It’s, it’s excruciatingly painful. Yeah.

Arlina Allen: painful. Excruciatingly painful. Yeah.

Tyler Patrick: I agree with you 100%. And we teach our clients kind of a, a structure to use when they decide who to tell what and

Arlina Allen: You

Tyler Patrick: yeah. Right. Yeah. Right.

Arlina Allen: Yeah.

Tyler Patrick: So we, we say if there’s a person who’s willing to learn with you what you’re going through, so they’re gonna educate themselves, if they’re willing to keep your confidences, if they’re willing to shoot straight but show empathy, and then if they’re willing to not try to control your choices, anyone who meets those four

Arlina Allen: who

Tyler Patrick: is worth the [00:25:00] risk

Arlina Allen: That, that last one, not control your choices,

Tyler Patrick: Yeah.

Arlina Allen: I found myself like early on in my, you know, peer support programs that would be so clear on what the other person needed to do.

Tyler Patrick: Oh yeah, 100%. We know. I know.

Arlina Allen: Oh, yeah, 100%. We know. I know. I know it’s “Trust me, I know what’s right for you.” And then they would go off and do the exact opposite, and I’d get all butt hurt about it. Like, I would take it personally.

Tyler Patrick: hard

Arlina Allen: It’s awful. I, I think that’s why it’s so important to have professionals in your life. Because number one, they’re bound by law to keep your secrets.

Tyler Patrick: That’s the, yeah, that’s the second one. All righty. Yeah

Arlina Allen: Yeah. And, and they’re not going anywhere ’cause you’re paying them. But most people don’t get into that type of role because they don’t care.

Tyler Patrick: Sure

Arlina Allen: Yeah. And I think they’re the ones that really understand it’s not about the thing, it’s about what’s the underlying trauma that’s compelling it. So I feel like they have so much compassion [00:26:00] around it’s not why you…

It’s not the thing that you did, it’s why you did the thing that you did, and that’s what we need to dig into and understand. Like w- when I’m working with people, that is always… That’s, that’s where the magic happens.

Tyler Patrick: Mm.

Arlina Allen: when you go, “Oh, I had parents who abandoned me all the time. I had to achieve or perform in order to receive love, and if I failed, I was rejected, shamed, abandoned.” you, you know, you get hardwired to respond, like in fight or flight,

Tyler Patrick: Yes

Arlina Allen: when you feel that stress as an adult, you’re, like, repurposing those neurological, um, you know, th- those neural circuits.

Tyler Patrick: That’s right

Arlina Allen: those get triggered, and then you sort of go into survival mode. It’s, I mean, it’s so messy, but, um, I, I really appreciate the… When people can find the courage, if, if you can find a safe space first, and then it’s a little [00:27:00] easier to be courageous.

Tyler Patrick: Yeah, I’d say it’s courage is like taking steps up a ladder, right? You’re not gonna go and get over the pulpit at church this week and say, “Hey, everybody. Here’s my story,” right? Like, you know, like, but I remember this, like, it came out slowly with me where my wife found out first, and then some family members I told, and then I reached out to a few friends.

And by the time I was, like, two years in, my wife came to me one day and she’s like, “Hey, Tyler, do you ever tell your clients, like, your story?” And I was like, “No. No, no. I will– I’ll ruin my career if I do that.” And she said, “I think you should tell your clients. Your story’s really powerful. It’s really good.”

And so I sat on it for a week, and I went to my women’s group. It was a w- a group of women who had been betrayed by their spouses.

Arlina Allen: Mm.

Tyler Patrick: And I said, “Hey, group’s gonna be different today. I’m gonna just tell you my story,” and I told my story. And talk about, like, that nervous system thing you’re talking about, I [00:28:00] got in the car afterwards and I called my wife and I was shaking and I was crying

Arlina Allen: Oh. “

Tyler Patrick: Hey, I think I just ruined my career.”

And my wife kinda sat there and listened and then she said, “I think, Tyler, it’s gonna be better than you think.” And I went back the next week and there were, like, 12 women in the group and two of them were furious with me. They were just really, really mad. The other 10 were like, “Best group we’ve ever had.

I trust you more now. I wanna work with you more now.” And, and it’s like my brain started to go, “Wait a second,” like how could I think it was gonna be complete rejection and now 10 out of 12 are saying, “Thank you”? Like, “I understand you better now. You understand my partner better now.” Like, and, and so that starts to change the belief system and that’s why we become resilient to our shame is a little at a time leaning into courageous acts.

Pretty soon you can share your story for 30 years of, you know, you can write a book about your [00:29:00] story.

Arlina Allen: Yeah, you

Tyler Patrick: yeah.

yeah.

Arlina Allen: That’s so interesting, um, that you did not focus on the two that were not That you didn’t focus on the two that were mad at you. It

Tyler Patrick: It hurt really bad.

Arlina Allen: It

Tyler Patrick: Yeah, but I thought I was gonna shoot 12 for 12, so 10 out of 12 wasn’t bad.

Arlina Allen: bad.

What happened, what ha- happened to the two that were i- mad at you?

Tyler Patrick: W-

Arlina Allen: they get over it?

Tyler Patrick: yeah, one of them actually left the group. She went somewhere else, which was fine. The other one molded over with all the other ladies in group

Arlina Allen: throughout the week. Mm-hmm.

Tyler Patrick: She came back and have ended up staying, and we ended up having a really great relationship. Um, so 11 out of 12 wasn’t too bad. Yeah

Arlina Allen: is not too bad. And, and we just never know what’s going on with people or th- what their path is about, and I just have to trust that everything happens on God’s timing, and, you know, [00:30:00] people get the message when they need to, how they need to.

Tyler Patrick: Yeah

Arlina Allen: But I’m– That’s so amazing that you were able to do that. I mean, that must have been such a big, um- Um, th- they say that sort of like… Oh, what am I trying to say? The tougher the challenge, the f- faster your heart is beating, the sweatier your palms are, it’s like the bigger the reward on the other side. Like, the freedom you must have felt after finally being like, “Hey, this is who I am. Th- this is what’s really…” You know. That… How did you feel afterwards?

Tyler Patrick: Yeah. I mean, it came in increments. Um, but after the

Arlina Allen: I mean,

Tyler Patrick: week of worry,

Arlina Allen: the week

Tyler Patrick: then it started to shift and I was like, “Wait, I’ve been looking at this all wrong,” and it was exactly what you just said. The word is freedom. There is so much freedom on the other side of secrecy, hiding, shame. There’s just authenticity and [00:31:00] integrity brings a ton of freedom.

Arlina Allen: That’s the transformation, that people have this idea that, uh, they’re holding onto is, “I can’t tell people who I really am, otherwise I’ll be rejected,” and then they do something that they’ve never done before, and e- especially if it’s scary and if it’s hard, then the freedom, that’s the transformation on the other side.

It’s like, “Oh, I was wrong,”

Tyler Patrick: That’s right

Arlina Allen: not what I thought it was gonna be,” and then they, they experience… That’s the transformation, is when we are able to h- identify, like, a limiting belief. Uh, I guess we identify the limiting belief after we have the experience probably.

Tyler Patrick: Sometimes I think it happens that way, but what you said is important to me. It’s not just the belief in your head, it’s the shift that happens in your physical body and in your heart where you’re like,

Arlina Allen: just the belief in your head, it’s “

Tyler Patrick: I’m still lovable even after you saw this?” It’s like, whoa. Like, that’s, that’s a [00:32:00] heart space thing as much as it a head space shift, right?

Arlina Allen: Yeah. A- another little idea that sort of made this more palatable for me is that those who matter don’t mind, and those who mind don’t matter.

Tyler Patrick: love that saying. That’s great.

Arlina Allen: love that saying. That’s Dr. Seuss, by the way. The great. poet-

Tyler Patrick: That’s great

Arlina Allen: philosopher, Dr. Seuss. B- And, and really what that meant for me, it’s not that people aren’t important, but they’re just not important to my, um, my growth.

Like, I can still grow without them. I can still grow and evolve and find that freedom, and that’s really sort of the whole idea about addiction is, is about being imprisoned not having choices. And then recovery is about recovering choices and then experiencing this major life transformation.

Tyler Patrick: E-exactly. I, I look at our lives and we have two real gifts. We have a physical body, so we can actually experience everything that this world has to offer, and we [00:33:00] have choice. And recovery is simply just a reclamation and an understanding that I have choice,

Arlina Allen: Mm.

Tyler Patrick: I get to do with my body anything that I want to, hopefully something that leads me to take care of myself and other people

Arlina Allen: Yeah. I love that. Um, okay, so that was The second C. What is the third

Tyler Patrick: The third C is compassion, and this is the one where people get tripped up because they think self-judgment will motivate. But compassion is the pathway to freedom. It’s a pathway to what I call radical self-acceptance.

Arlina Allen: Mm.

Tyler Patrick: When I can accept everything that I am, I can look myself in the mirror without judgment and appreciate the miracle that I am.

And so I teach them the Kristin Neff version of self-compassion.

Arlina Allen: Yeah.

Tyler Patrick: Yeah.

Arlina Allen: get her on the podcast. She’s, too busy for

Tyler Patrick: Yeah.

Arlina Allen: me. she’s

Tyler Patrick: She’s, she’s great.

Arlina Allen: Give me

Tyler Patrick: Yeah. [00:34:00] Yeah, so there’s, so there’s three parts to self-compassion. Pretty simple. The first one is mindfulness. I need to become aware of the comings and goings of what my shame feels like. So I get this cloud in my head, I get this pit in my, like, core, my shoulders start to sink in.

I feel this, like, “Ugh,” and then the judgment kicks in. “You suck. You’re a failure.”

Arlina Allen: Shame spiral.

Tyler Patrick: All that. So if I recognize it, I’m gonna tie together my thoughts to my physical sensations and give it a name emotionally. So this used to happen all the time with me after every session. I’d hear like, “Oh, Tyler, you should’ve done this.

You suck. Da-da-da-da-da.”

Arlina Allen: da, da.”

Tyler Patrick: then I’d feel it in my stomach, and then I’d say, “Oh, Tyler, that’s your shame.” So you recognize it. Second step is called common humanity, and what you do is you take your experience and you just acknowledge, “Tyler, you’re feeling shame. You’re feeling a moment of suffering right now.

The truth [00:35:00] is that you’re human. Everybody feels shame. There’s probably millions of people right now feeling shame.” So you give yourself permission to be human, and then the third part is the self-compassion part. And what you do with the self-compassion is you t-treat yourself and talk to yourself like you would your best friend.

So if your best friend called you up and said, “Man, I feel so compromised. I feel so weak. I feel so inadequate. I keep failing at this,”

Arlina Allen: are

Tyler Patrick: what are you gonna say to your best friend? You’re gonna say… And I, I even teach my clients to put their hand right over their heart and press their palm against their chest.

They can feel that warmth going into their core for a second, take a couple of deep breaths, and then just, “Hey, Tyler, it’s all right. You’re a work in progress. You were built to be a force for good in this world. You don’t have to be perfect today. You get to grow till you die. You’re, you’re awesome. I love you.”

Right? Just the way I would my best friend. And [00:36:00] I’m gonna cycle through that maybe 100 times today, especially if I’m early on in my recovery

Arlina Allen: Yeah, they say that repetition is the mother of mastery, right? Where… And that’s, uh, retraining your nervous system, ’cause we’ve had years of repeating negative things. It’s not reasonable to expect that you can say something like that, something positive once, and it’s going to reframe your nervous system.

Tyler Patrick: That’s right. I, I encourage my clients to recognize their shame, and every time they feel their shame, do that, do that self-compassion. I started doing it when I was taught by my boss. He was my mentor. I worked for Drug Courts of Southeastern Idaho at the same time I was doing my own recovery work, and he said, “Tyler, I want you to do this exercise every time you feel your shame.”

And so I did it. And so I’d 10, 20, 50 times a day. And about three weeks in, it never felt true. It felt fake. It felt hokey, you know? About three weeks in, I got done with a session, and before I [00:37:00] even recognized the shame, my brain was like, “Tyler, you’re a force for good in this world. You do a lot of good for people.

You don’t have to be perfect.” And I was like, “That was muscle memory. I didn’t even have to think about that. Like, that just happened, and I kind of actually even believe it, too. Like, wow, I can change this.”

Arlina Allen: this.” Yeah. Um,

Tyler Patrick: it took some time and repetition, and I think that repetition is really important

Arlina Allen: Yeah. That is so cool. It’s, it’s one of those things, like you don’t have to understand why it works sometimes. Sometimes if you just take the act- like taking action, I, I… Yeah. I’m, I beat it like a, a dead horse, this idea that we have to take the right actions, like think the right thoughts, feel the right feelings. Like, you can absolutely be mindful and intentional about it. And it’s so funny ’cause when you’re talking about like, “I’m a good per- like I’m smart, I’m funny, everybody likes me,” you know? It, it, it doesn’t feel true, but your, your mind will adapt to that. ‘Cause you know what else isn’t true? That you’re a horrible person. [00:38:00] Like, none of that’s true either. But you just did it so long and often enough that it felt true,

Tyler Patrick: That’s right

Arlina Allen: you know, going to work every day, taking your care, taking care of your kids every day, and trying to do the right thing all the time. You know what I mean? It’s like… So I appreciate that, you know, that it doesn’t have to feel true, but if you take the actions, it’s an…

It’s one of those things that’s like, you know, James Clear from Atomi- Atomic Habits, he talks about systems.

Tyler Patrick: Yes

Arlina Allen: a system where the end result is inevitable. That’s like a guarantee if I ever heard one.

Tyler Patrick: I love that. That’s so good. I love James Clear’s stuff too, and you know, that idea of enough action over time. It’s like, have you ever listened to a song on the radio, Arlina, and you hear it and you’re like, “That song sucks. I hate this song.” They’re trying too hard or, you know. And then about a month and a half yeah, a month and a half later, you hear this song on the radio and you go, “Oh, I love this song.”

Like, the only difference is, is they crammed it into your head 32,000 times [00:39:00] more, and all of a sudden you’re like, “Oh, yeah,

Arlina Allen: like

Tyler Patrick: I like that song.”

Arlina Allen: Yeah.

Tyler Patrick: Yeah, that…

Arlina Allen: comes to

Tyler Patrick: Yeah, exact- exactly. That’s exactly. That’s what happens, is it’s just repetition, and our brains can be molded for good the same way that they were molded for bad.

Yeah

Arlina Allen: so funny, this idea of neuroplasticity. It’s, it, it, it’s a thing. Like, I love listening to the Huberman Lab podcast ’cause they, they’re always talking about, uh, the science of neurology. And Yeah

you can absolutely re- rewire your mind, but it’s not just rewiring your mind.

It’s, like, rewiring your subconscious beliefs, rewiring your nervous system. It’s all connected.

Tyler Patrick: Exactly. They’re all tied

Arlina Allen: Uh, he, he actually, Huberman actually talked about this idea that we think of the mind being in your cranial vault, in reality, your entire body is interfused with, uh, uh, nervous tissue,

Tyler Patrick: That’s right

Arlina Allen: And that if you took a… If [00:40:00] you had a silhouette of a human body, and you took away everything but the nervous system, it still looks like a human body.

Tyler Patrick: That’s right

Arlina Allen: sh- ’cause it’s every square inch of your body. So it’s so interesting, um, this idea of, like, the holistic mind, body, spirit.

It, it all, it’s all interconnected. So it makes sense that, you know, you start treating the beliefs, the stories that we tell ourselves, like reconditioning the felt experience, like your example of the hand on the heart and the self-compassion. That rewires your entire nervous system, which then allows you to respond to things that would trigger a relapse.

It would, uh, it allows you to respond differently to those things. Exactly. That’s

Tyler Patrick: Exactly. That’s the expansion of the choice we’re talking about now. Instead of the autopilot kicking in and, “Oh, this is what I do when I’m stressed,” or whatever else, it’s like, “Wait a second. Okay, [00:41:00] that’s what’s going on in my body right now. I know how to breathe through that. I know how to use my skills.

I can…”

Arlina Allen: can…”

Tyler Patrick: I, I’ll tell you a story. This is…

Arlina Allen: story. This

Tyler Patrick: I was… Sometimes I get asked to teach the lesson in church about porn addiction because that’s what I do for a living, you know? It’s like…

Arlina Allen: that’s my specialty right now. Those, those two words, porn addiction and church,

Tyler Patrick: Oh,

Arlina Allen: together. exactly. But it’s like the worst, probably the worst at church.

Tyler Patrick: Yeah, yeah, exactly, exactly. So that’s exactly how it is. So like they introduce you as like, “This is Tyler Patrick.

He’s gonna talk about porn addiction.” And it’s like it either goes, everyone looks at the floor or people are like, “What’s porn?” Like, “I don’t know what porn is.” You know, like you know? Yeah. It’s… So

Arlina Allen: clutch their pearls or they just

Tyler Patrick: exactly, exactly. So, so I’m driving over to this like church building on a Sunday, and I’m driving there and I get lit up with just this sexual trigger urge.

And I’m like, “What is going on right now?” And it happened to be on a Sunday. It happened to be a fast Sunday and I was fasting [00:42:00] that day, so I was hungry. My daughter had thrown up twice that night so I was awake, tired. And now I’m going to teach the porn lesson in church which means I’m gonna feel a lot of anxiety because being that dude is not fun, right?

And so

Arlina Allen: Do guys pull you aside? Okay, finish your

Tyler Patrick: Yeah, yeah. So, so I’m driving there and I’m like, bam, I get hit with this trigger. And now because I’ve, I’ve been doing this long enough, I’m like, “What’s going on?” And it’s like, “Oh, you’re tired, you’re hungry, you’re stressed, and you happen to be driving by this gas station that has amazing chicken fingers.”

So that’s part of it, too, right? So okay, when I get done I’ll call my brother Brandon, I’ll talk it through with him, I’ll go home take a nap, eat a nice dinner, everything’s gonna be fine. And what happened to the sexual trigger? Starts coming down ’cause it’s like, “Oh, okay, you’re gonna take care of me today,” right?

So that awareness leads to choice and that awareness leads to the right choices to take right care of [00:43:00] self

Arlina Allen: Yeah

Man, that question, what’s really going on. Yeah.

Tyler Patrick: Yeah

Arlina Allen: That’s, that’s, that’s really a powerful question. Noticing, it’s like, oh my gosh, I feel so compelled to do the thing, whatever the thing is.

Tyler Patrick: So hard

Arlina Allen: compe- it happens so fast. I feel like slowing down is something people don’t really talk about that much, but we have to slow down and just be like, “Wait a minute. What’s, what’s really going on? is it in my body? What am I thinking? What am I feeling?” And just giving a little space for pause and allowing your brain, you know, your prefrontal cortex to come back online ’cause when we get stressed, it’s, you go into fight or flight, your frontal cortex goes offline, and you’re in reactive survival mode.

Tyler Patrick: That’s such a huge tool you just outlined right there, just the simple practice of simple awareness

Arlina Allen: Yeah. it down.

Tyler Patrick: Yeah. ‘

Arlina Allen: Cause it happens so

Tyler Patrick: [00:44:00] Oh,

Arlina Allen: it?

Tyler Patrick: it’s like that fast. Yep

Arlina Allen: Oof. Tell me, uh, after your porn talk at church, do a bunch of bros pull you aside and go, “Oh my God, dude, me too”? Yeah, so,

Tyler Patrick: Yeah, so, so usually what ha-

Arlina Allen: talk to you afterwards?

Tyler Patrick: yeah, yeah, it’s usually, usually what happens is like a weird mix is there’s like the big crowd that shuffles out as quick as they can, and then there’s like a few discreet people that kind of sit around the corners of the room and wait for everyone else to leave, and then they come up and like, “Hey, that’s my story, too.”

Or… So I’ve learned, I’ve learned that if I just leave questions and then my like email address or something, that by the time I get home, I get my, an inbox full of like, “Wow, that lesson was me tote to a T.” Like, “Can I hel- you know, can you help me?” Or whatever.

Arlina Allen: he- you know, can you help me?” Or whatever. You

Tyler Patrick: yeah.

Arlina Allen: around with like a QR code on your T-shirt.

Tyler Patrick: Yeah,

Arlina Allen: Got porn?

Tyler Patrick: it’s, uh, it’s actually pretty fun though because it kind of like shatters people’s like, “Oh, wow, we can talk about this in, even inside of these spaces,” right? So [00:45:00]

Arlina Allen: I was gonna make an inappropriate joke

Tyler Patrick: go for it.

Arlina Allen: Go for It my pastor at church, uh, this last Sunday. There was a substitute, and I was like, “Look at the floor, woman.” “Stop looking at the dude.” I told my husband when we walked out, I was like, “Wow, that guy was really handsome.” He started laughing at me. You’re not supposed to be thinking about that at church, Arlina. It happens. It happens. Yeah.

Tyler Patrick: Yeah.

Arlina Allen: Oh, Yeah. I like the bald guys.

Tyler Patrick: Yeah.

Arlina Allen: Yeah.

Tyler Patrick: There you go.

Arlina Allen: I can hear the message. All right.

That was probably TMI. Um, okay, back to center. So we have context, courage, and self-compassion. I love this. This is, you know, um, shame resiliency 101, and I think that this is… these are skills that are so, uh, vital to long-term recovery. I just want people to know that if you’re new in recovery Be [00:46:00] compassionate with yourself if you don’t get this the first time, if you don’t get this the 10th time, if you don’t get this the 100th time. I really believe that if we just keep coming back to the practice you know, finding someone to talk to and, and doing all these practices, that eventually… this, uh, law, 51%. I don’t know if we talked about it when… this sound familiar,

Tyler Patrick: I don’t think we talked about it

Arlina Allen: it … The law of 51% states that if y- if you look at a balance scale and y- there’s pebbles on one side that are weighing you down, those are all the negative thoughts and beliefs and experiences that we have, and on the other side, every time that you try, you take an action and have a positive experience, that puts a pebble on the other side. So a lot of this stuff is cumulative, but you don’t need to be 100%. All you need is [00:47:00] 51% to actually tip the scales, and that’s what we’re trying to do. We’re not trying to be perfect. We’re not try- you know, they talk about perfect abstinence and s- and that’s, I guess, for some, like for me, that absolutely needed to be the goal because the consequences for me for picking up a drink again were so severe.

Like, I could kill somebody or myself. that’s… I was pretty extreme in my alcoholism, drunk driving, all that stuff, alcohol poisoning, putting myself into dangerous situations. For me, the consequences of picking up again were so severe it was really important for me to do 100% abstinence, and it

I thought in the very beginning I had to be perfect, but that’s not the case, right?

The case is you just have to be a little more yes than no.

Tyler Patrick: I love that.

Arlina Allen: what tips the scale.

Tyler Patrick: And over time, that tips the scale in a massive way.

Arlina Allen: Yeah

Tyler Patrick: Yeah

Arlina Allen: A massive way. I also… The other idea that I keep in mind is no matter how far down the road you go, you’re still the same distance from the ditch. [00:48:00] So for me, that speaks to this idea of humility, that I absolutely have to continue to practice my self-care and all the things that we talked about because it’s j- you know, I’m just one drink away from destroying this beautiful life that I’ve created. You know, a 32-year marriage and a beautiful home and a, a career I love and important work, all that stuff.

Tyler Patrick: Yeah

Arlina Allen: Yeah. Man, just one drink away.

Tyler Patrick: Yeah, and I think that there’s no shame in that though. That’s a beautiful thing. Yeah, right. Exactly, and that’s… You’re actually creating an amazing life knowing that the ditch is still on either side,

Arlina Allen: Yeah, to

Tyler Patrick: right?

Arlina Allen: think about it that

Tyler Patrick: Yeah, me neither. Me neither

Arlina Allen: My daily practices are so ingrained. I was just… My sister-in-law, she’s, um… I just love her to death, salt of the earth, zero addiction issues, right? And we were talking about it, and she’s like, “Do you still…” ‘Cause she was having a glass of wine. We were at this event together, and she was having a glass of wine.

She’s like, “Does it bother you?” And I was like, “Not [00:49:00] in the least.” You know, it’s like I… My self-care, I’m kind of high maintenance. I pray, I meditate, I journal, I talk to other people. I do all this stuff, but it doesn’t feel like effort to me. I’ve been doing it so long that it’s just like breathing. It’s just what I do.

I don’t even think about it anymore. So it’s like I’m doing those mental pushups without having-

Tyler Patrick: Exactly. Your habit now

Arlina Allen: It’s just ha- Yeah. Second nature.

Tyler Patrick: Yeah, and then you level yourself up, so now while you drive, you can see the scenery and just know that the ditch is there.

Arlina Allen: just know that the ditch is there. Yeah. But it was funny because I think, just recently I had a dream about eating a THC gummy, and I don’t even…

I’m not even sure where that came from. That was a big part of my story, too. But yeah, I haven’t smoked weed in over 32 years. But yeah, I had a dream about it. It was so weird. But anyway,

Tyler Patrick: I see

Arlina Allen: such a lovely conversation. I really appreciate, um… These are such practical tools. I feel like we really delivered on our, our commitment and our promise [00:50:00] to, um, deliver some ideas around what guilt and shame really is, how they work, and the tools and practices for that transformation that everybody wants to have.

So

Tyler Patrick: Awesome

Arlina Allen: else that, uh, that comes to mind that you wanna share before we wrap up?

Tyler Patrick: Just a word of hope to people listening. If you’re new, if you’re pretty new into the recovery process, it can be overwhelming and feel pretty daunting. Uh, there is life on the other side of this, and it’s really beautiful. And you put in the right effort, you put in the right heart, you’re gonna look back years from now and you’re gonna be smiling the way Arlina is right now

Arlina Allen: now

Yeah. That was really beautiful. Um, if people are interested in connecting with you, how can they, uh, find you?

Tyler Patrick: Yeah, best place is therapybrothers.org/onedayatatime

Arlina Allen: Oh,

Tyler Patrick: It’ll go straight, it’ll go straight to a picture. It’ll go to your picture, Arlina.
